No matter how much parents preach that getting a college will depend on one’s preparation a student is always in two minds in predicting the college he/she will manage to get coming fall. Personally, I applied to a few schools which ended up cost me about $100 give or take. Now a new Facebook app can help you with the process, think of it as a different kind of financial aid.
Allen Gannett who had his own share of difficulties with the college admissions, knows this well, that’s why he has launched a Facebook App, AdmissionSplash, that tells students how likely they are to gain admission at their school of choice.
It has 1,500 schools listed and users input their GPA, standardized test scores and anticipated major to determine their chances. There is also optional information you can input to optimize the accuracy. Students can mark if they volunteered, played sports, worked in high school or were part of any clubs.
The program then uses this data, along with public admissions statistics, to predict the student’s chance of getting into any of the 1,500 colleges currently included. To make the prediction more concrete, the algorithm used by the software also takes into account overall acceptance rates per admission cycle.
Another error I find with this app is that when a user inputs SAT scores, it will ask for a writing score Facebook App. Luckily I never had to take the writing portion, but the app prompted me into input a number and I was forced to mark 0. It is unknown whether the app takes into consideration the user’s graduation year and whether or not the writing portion was available.
While I wouldn’t trust a social networking site to predict if you’ll be able to get into college, it could save you the many hours it takes to write a dozen different admissions essays.
