Olive is one of the first Indian companies to push the pedal in the Tablet space here in the country. With current world-champion, the Apple iPad, still not officially available in the country and Samsung pricey Galaxy Tab leaving us not entirely convinced, the Android-based OlivePad VT-100 3G tablet in comparison has been around for quite some time.
Now, the company plans to enter the arena of Android smart-phones; an area much more vastly populated than tablets. TelecomYatra reported the company chairman Arun Khanna talking about a range of smartphones based on Android 2.2 by the first week of March next year. While Android 2.2 (Froyo) may not be as fresh as the recently announced Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), it is still better than an array of phones which still run Android 2.1 (Eclair) as of now.
It is also stated that the company is aiming its guns high and wants to compete with premium Android smart-phones like the highly-successful Samsung Galaxy S. Only a few models are able to bring what are considered to be high-end features (like a 1 GHz processor, an 800 x 480 pixel display, 720p video recording) below the Rs. 20,000 mark. Like a handful of them including the Samsung Wave II, Nokia C7 or the unreleased Huawei IDEOS X6 are able to pull it off for now.
Olive, we wish you all the best for that. Just one thing – please don’t make a slab-like phone with a 5 inch display on the footsteps of the Dell Streak. It’s not going to be as pleasurable the 7 or 10 inch displays on tablets, nor is the size going to be pocket-able unless the buyer wears suits 24/7. Please don’t be under the impression that they combine the best of both worlds, they actually bring together the worst, in our opinion. Up to four inches is a big enough screen size.
