The Samsung Gem aka SCH-I100 is a mid-level Android phone. We first heard about this device in August. It has resurfaced on Samsung US website after being out of limelight for a while.
The Samsung Gem has an 800MHz processor. It runs Android 2.1 and has a 3.2 inch WVGA display made of anti-scratch and anti-smudge glass. Other specifications include a 3.2 megapixel camera and the Swype application. There is still no word on pricing, but back in August there were reports that Verizon would sell the phone for about $150 on a 2 year contract.
Samsung says on the site that “If you’ve never owned a smartphone, this is the perfect first choice. The Gem has many of the features of more expensive phones, at an affordable price. It’s the Samsung smartphone at a very smart price”.
No carrier was discussed on the web site, but we would imagine that considering that the specs are about the same from August, there would be no reason to expect a new carrier. This means that it should be Verizon line up being bolstered by this mid range device. No launch date is known at this time, but with Samsung posting this on its web site, we should be able to find out more soon.
